AMAZING: Bride Writes Exam On Her Wedding Day

Although you may think that it a comedy or a prank, it is a real story that happened at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, Ondo state. On her wedding day, Oluwatunmise Adejube, a student of Department of Accountancy, hurriedly left the Owo local government area, where she swore matrimonial oath, and rushed to the school to write an exam. The Nation reports that the new wife was accompanied by a group of young ladies, who formed her bridal train. They stormed the school in a convoy of three exotic cars. No need to describe faces of other students in the examination hall, when a young lady in a sparkling wedding dress sauntered in, walking dazzlingly on the narrow path between the hall benches. Before invigilators understood what was happening, the tension-soaked atmosphere became relaxed as the sudden appearance of the bride elicited laughter from the stressed students, who prepared to write a difficult paper. An hour later, Oluwatunmise was on her way from the examination hall to reception, where her husband and guests were waiting for her. An invigilator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Oluwatumise was allowed to write the paper despite her lateness for the exam. He also praised the girl for her determination not to be carried away by the euphoria of the wedding. Speaking with reporters after writing the paper, Oluwatumise stressed that her education was as important to her as her marriage. “When the wedding date was fixed some months ago, nobody knew it would clash with my second semester examination. What appears to be a saving grace for me is that, both the wedding and examination are taking place in the same town. If otherwise, I would have missed the three-unit paper and carry it automatically,” she said. The groom, Mr Adesina, said that he was shocked and stumped when his bride told him the examination timetable clashed with the wedding. “I really praised her dogged determination. It was like a tug of war because she had to prepare for her exam and ran around for the wedding at the same time. Now that the confusion is over, I give thanks to God for making it easy for us,” he said.

Wicked Man Rapes Two Daughters & Stepdaughter In Lagos

The Nigerian Police have arrested 37 year old Ajiboye Oluwaseyi, for allegedly raping his two daughters a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old and his 15 year old stepdaughter in the Lekki area of Lagos state. It was gathered that Oluwaseyi, who hails from Ondo State, was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, after his wife reported the matter to the police. It was learnt that Oluwaseyi, who worked as a Lotto agent, had separated from his wife in December 2014. He was said to have taken the 2 girls from his wife, leaving her with a baby (the 3rd child) and allegedly convinced his stepdaughter, Simbi (not her real name) to stay with him. It was learnt that Simbi had allegedly been raped many times before she opened up to a neighbour, who reported the matter to the mother who went to a non-governmental organisation to report the sexual abuse of her daughter. The police were informed and they in turn arrested Oluwaseyi and also took the 3 girls for medical tests which confirmed that Simbi had been raped on several occasions, while Oluwaseyi’s two daughters had also been defiled. The suspect’s wife said she left her husband to avoid an untimely death. She added that Oluwaseyi refused her access to her daughters until the NGO and the police got involved. She said: “We were staying together in the Lekki Phase 1 area. My 15-year-old daughter, whom I had for another man, and the two daughters I have for Oluwaseyi were living with us until December. “We had a quarrel and Oluwaseyi threatened to kill me. He sent me out. “Family members, including his father, appealed to him to reconcile with me, but he refused. He also refused to allow me to see my daughters. “When I heard about the rape, I confronted him on the matter. He boasted that nothing would happen to him. He broke bottles, and said he would kill me. Later on when I sat my first daughter down, she confessed to me that she was truly raped, and that it had occurred on several occasions. “That was why I took the matter to the government, so that they would help me to check Oluwaseyi’s excesses.” It was gathered that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, provided medical attention, through the Mirabel Centre, to the three girls, and ensured that the police got the suspect arrested. A police source said “The woman initially left with the teenager and the two girls she has for Oluwaseyi in December, 2014. The suspect, however, trailed her and forcefully took the girls, threatening to take her life if she refused. “The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, in the family’s Lekki apartment, while his daughters were also taken to the centre for tests. It was confirmed that they had been defiled. The two of them are in Primary 3 and Primary 1 respectively.” The girls are currently living with their mother. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the incident. She added that Oluwaseyi had been arrested.

Corruption: APC knocks Igbo leaders for defending Jonathan

The South-East chapter of the All Progressives Congress says Igbo leaders who are opposing the probe of former President Goodluck Jonathan are desecrating the Igbo tradition. It said the Igbo leaders who are supporting the former President are in breach of the traditional admonition which forbids Igbo from identifying with thieves or alleged thieves. Several Igbo leaders, including the Chairman of the Igbo Leaders of Thought, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, and the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Joe Nwaorgu, had in recent times opposed President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to restrict the planned probe to Jonathan’s administration. They insisted that Jonathan’s government should not be probed unless other previous administrations were included. However, reacting to the development on Sunday, the South-East APC, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, told the Igbo leaders to stop desecrating Igbo tradition by supporting Jonathan. In the statement titled, ‘Stop desecration of Igbo tradition’, Okechukwu wondered why Jonathan’s defence was being championed by Igbo leaders, rather than the ex-President’s Ijaw kinsmen. The statement read, “The South-East zonal chapter of the APC calls on Igbo leaders, in the name of defending our dear ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, to stop the desecration of the long standing Igbo tradition and by extension, our revered ancestors. “Our worry is that the timeless Igbo tradition which admonishes us not to steal, and not to defend or associate with rogues or even alleged rogues is being flagrantly breached by prominent Igbo sons, crying more than Ijaw sons and daughters. “We have yet to find any sentence where any of them, even our revered icon, erudite and constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, in any form denied the mindless, pervasive and unbridled corruption which pervaded ex-President Jonathan’s regime.” Okechukwu equally condemned Nwaorgu’s advice that Buhari should extend the probe to the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The South-East APC spokesman accused Nwaorgu of deliberately blocking a planned meeting between Buhari and Ohanaeze Ndigbo before the elections. According to Okechukwu, Buhari conveyed his request for the meeting, where he intended to “chart the way forward with Ndigbo”, in a letter forwarded to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo secretariat in November 2014. The statement added, “May we appeal to Chief Joe Nwaorgu and his cohorts, if actually the interest of Ndigbo is what they are fighting for, to climb down from their high horses and stop the hate narratives and embrace the true position that Ndigbo stands to gain more from President Buhari’s regime, if ever we gained from our massive support to former President Jonathan.” The South-East APC argued that “Ndigbo like all hardworking groups in the country” stand to gain more from Buhari’s administration than Jonathan’s, which it accused of dispensing patronage to cronies. The party added that the Igbo were more likely to realise their wish to have one of their own as President of the country through Buhari. According to Okechukwu “The Igbo ethnic merchants and gossip-terrorists who bandy all manners of conspiracy hate theories against President Buhari must come to terms that an eight-year tenure of the man of uncommon integrity is the surest route to the actualisation of President of Igbo extraction, given the zoning convention.”

Corruption, worst rights violation ever —Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday described corruption as the greatest human rights violation ever. Justifying the reason why his administration is waging a large scale war against graft, Buhari said the effects of corruption were manifest in suffering, deprivation and death that innocent people were being exposed to. He therefore urged Nigerian lawyers to support his administration to win the war against corruption. According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President spoke at the opening of the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja. He called on Nigerian lawyers to support his administration’s war against corruption and help the country return to the path of rectitude by making Nigerian courts functional and effective again. Noting that lawyers are often in the vanguard of the defence of human rights, Buhari urged them to view corruption too as a gross violation of human rights. He said, “For the masses of our people, the millions still wallowing in want and diseases, corruption is a major reason why they cannot go to school; why they cannot be gainfully employed; and why there are few doctors, nurses and drugs in their hospitals and health centres. “It is the reason why pensioners are not paid and potable water is scarce. “In effect, corruption diverts public resources meant for millions of people into the private pockets of a greedy few, thereby causing a lot of suffering, deprivation and death. “In my view, there can be no greater violation of human rights. “Viewed in this way, I think we can all fully appreciate the gravity of this oppressive and destructive evil. This should rouse us to fight it with the same zeal and doggedness as we deploy in the defence of fundamental rights.” The President also told the lawyers not to sacrifice the integrity of the country’s legal system in a bid to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be. He said he was convinced that law, lawmakers, lawyers, law courts and law enforcement agencies had responsibilities to discharge, if the change Nigerians earnestly seek would ever materialise.

Pastor Reveals How Boko Haram Killed 8,000 Members Of His Church

Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), Rev. Samuel Dali, has disclosed that no fewer than 8,000 of his members have been killed by members of the Boko Haram in the North-East zone of the country. The cleric said aside the ma$$acre of his church members, 70% of church facilities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States were destroyed in series of attacks championed by the insurgents. Yan’uwa was, however, optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari would end the activities of Boko Haram. Speaking with journalists in his Jos office, the cleric lamented that most of the church’s pastors had lost their jobs as their places of worship had been burnt and members killed, adding that 176 of the kidnapped Chibok girls were his members. “Nigeria will overcome the Boko Haram challenge soon. 70% of our churches have been destroyed in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states by Boko Haram; over 8,000 of our members were killed. 176 of the girls kidnapped in Chibok are our members,” he stated. All I Need To Steal Any Car Is Wire

If there is one thing Kehinde Oluomo has become adept at doing, it is carjacking. According to him, no matter what brand or how high-tech a car is, all he needs to break into it and steal it is a piece of wire. Oluomo, who was arrested by the Nigerian Police Force, Kwara State command, confessed to having stolen six cars through this means. The suspect, who said he was from Lagos State, explained that he started car robbery in 2013. According to him, his strategy was to monitor where vehicles were parked, ensured that nobody was watching him and then he broke into the vehicle with the aid of a wire. He, however, pleaded for forgiveness, saying he would never be involved in car stealing again if he is released. “I stole cars and sold them off. I normally sold to Sakiru (his co-accused). I have stolen only six cars. I brought the cars from Lagos to sell in Ilorin. I stole my first car in 2013,”Oluomo said. His co-accused, who identified himself simply as Sakiru, said he was arraigned for car theft sometime ago, but the case was later settled out of court. He claimed that since then, he had been an informant to the police, exposing to security operatives people involved in car theft. Sakiru said the devil pushed him into receiving a stolen car which led to his arrest by the police. He also expressed remorse for his action, saying he would never receive or buy stolen vehicles again. Another suspected receiver of stolen cars, Alhaji Oba Suleiman, who wept intermittently when they were being paraded by the police, said he sometimes bought stolen cars for as little as N25,000. The Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Ajayi Okesanmi, said the suspects were arrested in Ilorin on Monday by the anti-car theft team of the command through the efforts of the men of the command’s Intelligence and Investigation Department. According to him, the suspects led the team to recover five different cars from different locations. The PPRO stated that the recovered exhibits included one Mazda 626 car with registration number MUS 995 DC; Rav 4 Toyota SUV with registration number ARP 123 MY; Volkswagen bus with registration number EQ 819 ABY; Toyota comfort car with registration number BB 855 MWR and Toyota bus with registration number APP 965 CX.

Buhari’s integrity increases power supply, says APC

The integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari has led to the seeming stability in power generation and has also ensured an increase in its supply, the All Progressives Congress has said. It also stated that without adequate improvement in power supply, the President may not be able to fulfil most of his campaign promises. Before the new government came on board, power generation in Nigeria was between 3,000MW and 3,500MW. But in the past two months, electricity generation has continued to stay above 4,500MW. The spokesperson for the APC, Mr. Lai Mohammed, stated that the stability in power generation was attributable to the integrity that was brought into governance by Buhari. Speaking at 2015 Electricity Market Summit in Abuja on Thursday, Mohammed, who represented his party at the event, stated that the cases of pipelines vandalism had decreased significantly since the new administration took over from the Peoples Democratic Party. He said, “I say it anywhere I go that even though we have not added one single megawatt to power, there has been improvement. My colleagues in the PDP will say no; that’s not true. But I maintain that this improvement is as a result of the kind of integrity that President Buhari has brought to leadership. “Also, there has been a reduction in the cases of gas pipelines vandalism. Furthermore, the TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria), which used to have about 22 systemic power failures often times, now records about six or seven of such cases. So, what we have today is that we have a leadership that is inspiring Nigerians and making them to believe again in their country. We have a leadership that is promising to reward merit.” Mohammed observed that the country’s power generation was by far too low, when compared to its population. He said it was time to think outside the box with respect to increasing electricity generation and supply. He said, “Meanwhile, I will like to state here that a nation with a population of over 170 million people cannot make do with a power generation of under 10,000MW. Even if we achieve 10,000MW, it will not help us in our drive for industrialisation. I have been informed that even if all our power generating plants generate (power) today, we don’t have enough capacity to transmit all that is being generated. “We need to start thinking out of the box. We can’t afford to think conventionally, because in year 2030, our population will be about the third largest in the world and we cannot just rely on 6,000 to 10,000 megawatts. In the transition committee of President Buhari, we invited many professionals to come and address us on the power sector. The kind of time they gave us to build 20,000MW plant should be between five to seven years. But I don’t think this country can afford that luxury.” He further noted that the APC promised to create millions of jobs annually, but explained that this would not be possible unless there was improvement in power supply. The APC spokesperson said, “We must look for radical solutions to this problem, because there is no way a population of 170 million can share 6,000MW and you expect us to be among the top 20 economies in the world. There is very little we can achieve out of our pledges, if the power sector remains the way it is today. We did promise that we are going to create three million jobs a year. This promise is possible and do-able, but it will be much easier for us if the power sector also improves.”

Jealous lover sets woman, rival, three kids ablaze

Residents of Ajumose, Ogbein area of Ede in Osun State were woken up by the screams of three children, their mother and her lover, who were engulfed by fire on Sunday, August 16. It was gathered that the victims were set ablaze by a man, who allegedly felt scorned that his lover was also dating another man. The five victims were said to be the suspect’s rival, Munirudeen Lawal; the lover, Hadijat Adegoke, and her three children. Lawal and Adegoke were said to have been rushed to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, as a result of the burns they suffered. Sources at the hospital told our correspondent on Thursday that Lawal died on Tuesday while Hadijat died on Wednesday. Our correspondent gathered that Adegoke, 35, had recently moved to her own house, which had yet to be completed. The woman, along with her four children ─ Fawas (13), Ishwat (12), Sodiq (8), and Fathia (6), were said to be the residents in the two-bedroomed apartment. It was gathered that Adegoke had a bricklayer lover who assisted in erecting the structure, while other lovers also helped to erect the structure to its present state. It was gathered that Adegoke abandoned her husband at a rented apartment and invited Lawal to pass the night at the new house. Residents of the area said an unidentified man, who was also Adekoge’s lover, sneaked into the area. One of the residents, who pleaded not to be named, said, “The man discovered that they were having sex. He was visibly angry. Nobody paid him any notice because such drama was not a new thing here.” PUNCH Metro, however, gathered that the unnamed scorned lover came back with a jerrycan of petrol, poured the content around the room Adegoke and Lawal were sleeping and set it ablaze before escaping from the area. The fire which affected only the room, burnt the two lovers and three out of Adegoke’s four children. The kids were said to have sustained serious burns, but Ishwat escaped unscarred because she had yet to sleep when the suspect set the house ablaze. Residents of the area told our correspondent that they heard cries from the victims’ house and assisted in putting out the fire, and later took the victims to a hospital in the area. The three kids were taken to Muslim Hospital, Ede. Their maternal grandma, Mrs. Folasade Gafar, who was seen sobbing in the hospital, had yet to be told of the death of her daughter when our correspondent visited the place on Wednesday. The three children were seen writhing in pains, while the grandma and Ishwat were busy fanning them with hand fans. The grandma said the hospital had not asked them to pay any bill, but had commenced treatment. She called on Nigerians to come to the aid of the kids. Ishwat told our correspondent that she saw the man with a 50-litre jerrycan at 9pm on Sunday when she went outside the house to urinate. She said that she did not know the man, but she had thought that he was urinating as well. She added that around 11pm, she smelled petrol, but before she could do anything, the fire had engulfed the room. She said the man who slept inside the house on the fateful day was not her dad. The Area Commander, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun West, Mr. Femi Awofade, confirmed the incident. He said an investigation was ongoing to uncover who perpetrated the act, saying the suspect, when arrested would be made to face the wrath of the law. The Head, Public Relations and Protocol of the NSCDC, Mr. Wale Folarin, confirmed the death of Adegoke and Lawal to our correspondent on the telephone. He said, “I can confirm to you that the woman and the man have died. They died at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.”

You can probe Amaechi, court tells Rivers govt

THE Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on Thursday, dismissed the suit filed by a former governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, challenging the setting up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe his administration. The State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had constituted the Justice George Omereji-led judicial commission of inquiry to probe the sale of assets belonging to the state by the Amaechi administration. But Amaechi had gone to court to challenge the setting up of the commission of inquiry to probe the immediate past government. However, Justice Simeon Amadi, who delivered judgment in the suit, affirmed that the judicial commission of inquiry was not established to investigate the personal activities of the former governor. Justice Amadi added that the commission was established to investigate the previous actions of government as they affected the people of the state. According to him, Wike, by the provisions of the law, is empowered to establish the judicial commission of inquiry to investigate previous actions of government. Justice Amadi specifically said that there was no law preventing a state government from finding out how the state’s resources were spent. On the assertion by Amaechi that the 30 days set aside for the sitting of the judicial commission of inquiry will deny him fair hearing, Justice Amadi maintained that the number of days set aside for the commission did not breach his (Amaechi) right to fair hearing. According to him, since Amaechi has yet to file a memorandum before the commission and has not appeared before it, the former governor cannot complain of not being given a fair hearing. The court stated that the 30 days set aside for the commission of inquiry were not sacrosanct and could be extended. The court described Amaechi’s suit as being speculative because the former governor failed to prove the injuries he had suffered as a result of the establishment of the commission of inquiry. Amadi added that the terms of reference of the commission did not accuse the former governor of crime – contrary to the former governor’s claim. He pointed out that the former governor was not on trial, saying, “The judiciary is not only the last hope of the common man, but it is also the last hope of the mighty and the movers and shakers of democracy. Those who by the benevolence of the judiciary got to power should resist the temptation to emasculate the judiciary.” However, the Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Emmanuel Aguma, explained that with the court ruling, the commission of inquiry could begin its sitting and promised that it would be fair to all parties. Aguma pointed out that the court decision on the matter had shown that no claimant could run to a court to stop the “legitimate business” of a judicial commission of inquiry. But Amaechi’s counsel, Mrs. Winifred Enyinnaya, said the former governor would appeal against the judgment.

The label’s lead act, Kcee has just confirmed that Soso Soberekon, before now the General Manager of Five Star Music, has been fired for misleading the public on the Skiibii death story. The Limpopo crooner further stated that Skiibii is recuperating gradually

Non-appointment of ministers shows Buhari’s military hangover – Nwabueze

Renowned law scholar and leader of the Concerned Igbo Leaders of Thought, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for delaying the appointment of ministers into his cabinet. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria described Buhari’s refusal to appoint ministers over 80 days after taking office as a reflection of Buhari’s military personality. He said this was why former President Olusegun Obasanjo (also a former soldier) failed to appoint ministers on time as well. He stated that the country’s constitution does not allow the President to govern the country for more than two months without ministers. Nwabueze, in an article titled, “Constitutionality of President Buhari Ruling Nigeria For More Than Two And Half Months Without a Council Of Ministers: The Concerns of the Igbo Leaders Of Thought,” a copy of which was sent to The PUNCH on Wednesday, said the President was expected to consult with “various executive bodies” before presidential actions. According to the professor of law, it is not likely that anyone other than a retired army general and former head of a military government would ever think of ruling the country for more than two and half months without ministers, knowing full well that the governmental system established for the country by the constitution does not permit him to do that. “And yet, knowing his antecedents and the influence they must have on him, Nigerians elected him as ‘civilian’ President in the March 2015 election. His election cannot but portray Nigerians as incapable of learning from past experience, a people lacking the degree of political maturity and sagacity required for the successful working of constitutional democracy,” Nwabueze added. The article read in part, “Since his inauguration on May 29, 2015, as elected ‘civilian’ President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, a retired army general and former head of the military government, has been ruling the country for more than two and half months without ministers. “The President ruling for more than two and half months without ministers is really incredible, but, incredible as it is, we Nigerians, as a people, ought to have foreseen it from our experience of the dictatorial way former President Obasanjo who, like President Buhari, is a retired army general and former head of the military government, rode roughshod over the constitutional limitations on his powers.”

Probe Fashola, Tinubu now, Bode George tells Buhari

A former National Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to take his anti-corruption war to the next level by probing the last two governors of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN). George said in a statement that it would be wrong of Buhari to claim to be spearheading an anti-graft campaign and at the same time be considering Fashola for appointment in the light of the N78.3m of taxpayers’ money Fashola spent on a personal website, www.tundefashola.com. He said Fashola’s excuse for spending N78.3m on a website was disgusting and should be rejected. He said, “We are living in a very interesting time. There is an air of repugnancy everywhere most especifically in my state where the immoral stench and the dark odium of Mr. Babatunde Fashola’s administration is daily being unearthed. “What is most disgusting and annoying in all these is the arrogant and the befuddled attempt of Mr. Fashola to justify the apparent reckless misappropriation of Lagos state taxpayers’ money to set up a personal web site. “Fashola shows no remorse, no semblance of regret, no guilty nudging of conscience. Instead, he still attempts to ride a high horse, puffing and stomping in feigned seraphic innocence. We are not fooled.” George said many of the projects undertaken by the Fashola were done at exorbitant prices. The PDP chieftain wondered how the 1.6km Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge could cost N29bn. He added, “We knew all along that the emperor had no clothes. Using N78m of taxpayers’ money to build a website is reckless misappropriation. The phony over N29bn used to build a mere kilometre long link bridge is outrageous venality. “The spurious N1.5bn allegedly spent on phantom pedestrian bridges is another con game. And there are so many of these screaming illegalities observable in the record of our poster boy of yesterday!” George said in a sane clime, Fashola would be facing comprehensive investigations rather than being considered for any appointment in the light of the over N419bn debt incurred by the Fashola government. He said the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government would do well to start implementing its promise of change from within. George said, “In a more just society, Mr. Fashola should be facing a comprehensive investigation rather than being considered for any appointment at all. President Buhari should use the Fashola case as an acid test of sparing no one with any intimation of public malfeasance. “Rather than engaging in a smug chest beating of innocence, Mr. Fashola should first remove himself from any consideration of public appointment and openly call for a judicial probe of his eight years in office. “Nothing else will bring out the true picture. Lagos State is now the biggest debtor in the federation with over a trillion naira in bad debts. It may take at least 40 years before Fashola’s indebtedness can be defrayed! What a malady!” George said there was no way Fashola would be probed without probing Tinubu because one was the creation of the other. He said, “In the end there is no way to divorce Fashola from Bola Tinubu. They are both linked in unutterable complicity. If Fashola stands today in tarnished allegations, Tinubu, his godfather, cannot possibly distance himself in innocent escapism. “If Fashola now rots in the mud, we must look through the depths to understand the instigating and factor. Whenever Fashola is cooling his feet at the interrogation centre, Tinubu should not be far behind.” All attempts to get Tinubu’s reactions proved abortive as calls put through to his media aide, Mr. Sunday Dare, were not responded to.

Buhari set to confirm Zakari as INEC chairman

Despite the current opposition to her candidature especially from the Peoples Democratic Party, President Muhammadu Buhari may soon confirm the appointment of the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Amina Zakari, The PUNCH has learnt. Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that Buhari may soon name Zakari the substantive chairman of the electoral body therefore foreclosing speculations that he may appoint somebody from outside the commission as Prof. Attahiru Jega’s successor. A source close to the arrangement told The PUNCH that the President had decided to confirm Zakari’s appointment instead of shopping for another chairman for INEC. The source, who pleaded anonymity because she is neither the spokesperson for INEC nor that of the Federal Government, said Zakari’s appointment would be confirmed early enough to enable her to oversee preparations for the governorship elections holding in Kogi and Bayelsa states this year. The source added that once the appointment of a substantive chairman was sorted out, the government would thereafter go ahead to fill the vacant positions of national commissioners. “It is almost certain that the President will soon confirm Mrs. Zakari’s appointment. She may be named the substantive chairman of INEC soon. The President does not seem to be interested in shopping for a chairman from outside the commission,” she said. Buhari had on June 30 appointed Zakari as the acting chairman of the electoral body following Jega’s retirement. Until her appointment, Zakari was a National Commissioner at INEC. A statement by Haruna Imrana, Director of Communications for the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, said she would be in charge until the appointment of a substantive chairman. Jega had earlier handed over to Ambassador Ahmed Wali, one of the commissioners at INEC. Zakari’s appointment attracted criticisms with the opposition PDP claiming that she is the President’s in-law, an allegation she had denied Some stakeholders have also been describing Zakari’s appointment as the acting INEC boss as unconstitutional, hinging their position on the fact that her appointment as national commissioner had expired on July 22. They argued that Zakari was appointed to act as the chairman by virtue of her appointment as a national commissioner and now that her appointment has elapsed, she ceases to be a member of the commission. Reacting to that position however, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, had told The PUNCH that in appointing the acting INEC chairman, the President only exercised his powers as provided for in Sections 154 and 318 of the constitution. “The appointment is covered by Sections 154 and 318 of the 1999 Constitution. The constitution empowers the President to appoint the woman in an acting capacity. It also covers the appointment even if her tenure has expired,”

Stop Calling Buhari 'baba Go Slow' Dickson Warns

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has said it is wrong for some Nigerians to call President Muhammadu Buhari “Baba go slow,” adding that such a derisive appellation demeans the office of the President in the eyes of the international community. Speaking during a news conference at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, Dickson said that calling the President derogatory names was bad politicking. He also condemned those who referred to former President Goodluck Jonathan as “clueless,” saying it was wrong to demean the occupier of the highest office in the land. The governor, whose tenure expires on February 28, 2016, has yet to formally declare his intention to seek re-election in the December 5, 2015 governorship election coming up in the state. He said, “What are you saying when you call President Buhari ‘Baba go slow?’ In what light are you putting the President before the international community? When you refer to someone as ‘clueless’, what do you mean?” Dickson explained that politics must be played with honour, dignity and integrity, stressing that the best way to develop the country was for the opposition and the ruling party to interrogate ideas and put the interest of the nation first always. “We should pray for our leaders. We should support them. Bad politics is not good,” he said. He dismissed the insinuation that the wife of former President Jonathan, Patience, was sponsoring a candidate in the All Progressives Congress against his governorship ambition. “Patience Jonathan is not my enemy. I’m not aware she’s sponsoring any candidate against me. Former President Jonathan believes I should be re-elected. He is my elder brother.” Dismissing the wave of defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in the state, the governor said the defection was inspired by greed, ambition and personal interests. He said, “All those who defected are my contractors. Would you call someone who gave you a contract your enemy? They are positioning themselves for federal appointments, as my party cannot give them that. “I have faced stiffer opposition in the past and I came out victorious. The PDP is solidly on the ground in Bayelsa and nothing can shake it. In the past 16 years, Bayelsa has always been with the ruling party. That is why some of them are going to the APC. It’s all part of politics. The defectors are not my enemies.”

Wife catches pastor having sex with church member

A 42-year-old woman, Mrs. Doris Oseni, has told a Customary Court in Ondo town, Ondo State, that she caught her husband of 12 years, Prophet Femi Oseni, on the floor of the church office, having sex with another woman. The woman, who is also an evangelist in the church, therefore asked the court for the dissolution of their marriage on the grounds of adultery, desertion and lack of love on the part of the husband. The plaintiff said her husband’s behaviour towards her changed after seven years of their marriage with no child, adding that the defendant had been sleeping around with different women, most of whom were their church members. She said, “Recently, after several days of abandoning me, I traced my husband to his church in a village not far from Ondo town. On getting there, I met him on the floor of the church office with one of the women in the church. They were having sex.” She said she reported her husband’s strange behaviour to his mother, adding that it did not stop him from the adulterous acts. She stated that she was fed up with the relationship, praying the court to separate them. Doris also accused the husband of having a child, who she said was a product of his extra-marital affairs . However, the 45-year-old Oseni pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage with his wife, saying he still loved the woman, whom he described as a virtuous woman that had been taking care of him since he married her. In his ruling, the President of the court, Joshua Adunbi, said the words and body language of the wife had shown that she was tired of the union. He therefore ordered the dissolution of the marriage . Adunbi added that both parties were free to re-marry any person of their choice and ordered the petitioner to pay the sum of N2,500 to the respondent as a refund of dowry. He said anyone of the parties that was not satisfied with the decision of the court could appeal the ruling within 30 days.

ICPC probe: ‘Super rich’ civil servants rush to sell houses

THESE are not comfortable times for some ‘super rich’ civil servants as they are said to be rushing to sell their choice houses and state-of-the-art automobiles in order to avoid losing the properties to the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft crusade. Already, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has reportedly confiscated some buildings said to have been owned by public servants whose earnings are said not to support ownership of such grand structures. Our correspondents learnt on Tuesday that some civil servants now bombard estate agents in the Federal Capital Territory in order to aid the quick sale of their properties, while financially buoyant buyers were said to have started cashing in on the development. One of our correspondents gathered that the sale of properties in Abuja since the new administration came on board had increased by about 30 per cent. In fact, it was learnt that property sales in the FCT increased “tremendously” within the past four weeks, in contrast to the lull that characterised the sector from January to May this year. Real estate agents in the Federal Capital Territory told The PUNCH that the increase could be attributed to the recent probes of government officials and the resultant confiscation of their properties by the ICPC. ThePUNCH had reported exclusively a few weeks ago that the ICPC would commence a clampdown on very wealthy civil servants. On August 16, SundayPUNCH reported that the ICPC had seized 24 landed properties that belonged to three officers of the Niger Delta Ministry. It stated that the properties were seized because they were “excessive of the emoluments of the affected officers.” The commission had also explained that the properties were seized in pursuant to Section 45 (4) a – (b) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000. The ICPC had, among others, said, “Whereas the commission is investigating a matter involving some staff of the Niger Delta ministry, wherein certain movable and immovable properties owned by the said staff are in issue. And whereas the commission is of the opinion based on the aforementioned investigation that these movable and immovable properties owned by these people who are staff of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs are excessive, having regard to their present emoluments and all other relevant circumstances. “The commission hereby notifies the entire public that all movable and immovable properties owned by these staff and listed hereunder are seized.” Real estate agents that spoke with our correspondents explained that some private individuals had started consulting real estate agents, requesting assistance in disposing of their properties. “The probe has created panic. Private persons now consult us, requesting our assistance in helping them sell their properties. Of course, they won’t say they are trying to avoid probe, but most of us know that that is what they are avoiding,” an agent and member of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, who pleaded not to be identified, said. When contacted, the immediate past National President/Chairman of Council, REDAN, Chief Olabode Afolayan, said that the property sector had witnessed an unprecedented boom in the sales of properties in the past few weeks. He said, “In the last couple of months, you could see that there was no activity at all. Between January and May, it was like there was no activity at all. So, what we are experiencing now shows that people are coming back to business and we hope that things will soon take normal shape.” When asked if the rise in sales of properties could be attributed to the anti-corruption stance of the President and the recent sanctioning of some civil servants, he said “that might not be far from the truth.” Afolayan said, “That might not be the case with estate developers because we are not government officials, rather we sell our own properties. But for owners of existing properties who are beginning to offload their belongings, then it might be for the reason not too far from what we are experiencing now, in which we have a government that is going to be proactive in addressing corruption and is not going to condone any form of negativity that will affect the system. “But for us, it is a different thing because we have our own businesses and many of our businesses are funded by financial institutions. We sell our properties now because we don’t want the devaluation of the naira to catch up with our businesses.” Afolayan’s successor and incumbent President of REDAN, Mr. Ugochukwu Chime, told one of our correspondents that it was expected for the sales of properties to increase, adding that many government officials of the past administration might want to dispose of their properties now. He said, “We have not done any study now. However, it is a seasonal thing. Some of the officials of the past government will not want to leave Abuja just like that, it is not possible. Those who are coming with the new government have moved massively into Abuja and they are willing to buy. “Those of the past government will want to sell their properties to either meet their needs or may do so not to leave Abuja just like that.” The FCT Chairman of REDAN, Mrs. Binta Ibrahim, said she could not attribute the haste by civil servants to dispose of their belongings to probe, but noted that the sales of properties had increased. “People are buying properties and sales have increased since the new administration came onboard, particularly in recent times. However, I cannot say if those selling are civil servants who are trying to avoid corruption probe by the President or not,” she said Meanwhile, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has applied to the ICPC for information on civil servants alleged to own properties worth billions of naira. The union said that it asked the anti-graft agency to furnish it with the details of civil servants that were discovered to have used proceeds of corruption to purchase properties in Abuja, Lagos and other cities of the country. The General Secretary, ASCSN, Bashir Lawal, said this on Tuesday when our correspondent asked him to react to the ICPC report in which many civil servants were alleged to own high net worth and choice properties. Lawal declined to comment on the report, saying the union needed to see the content of the ICPC report before it could offer a response to it. Lawal said, “We need to confirm whether the owners of the properties are real civil servants; at times, some people are brought into the civil service; so, are we talking of people brought into the service by politicians or the real civil servants? “We have called for details from ICPC; when we get the details, we will react appropriately.”

Read: A 16-year-old girl was forced to sleep with every male member of the cult during her initiation.

A 16-year-old girl, Ifechukwu Atunanya, claimed that she was forced to sleep with every male member of the cult during her initiation. Ifechukwu was among 75 suspected cult members who were rounded up by Anambra State Police command on July 3, 2015. All the suspects were alleged to be members of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity and were all arrested in a bush in Awka during the initiation of new members. It was during the raid that 16-year-old Ifechukwu was arrested. At the police station, Ifechukwu, a secondary school dropout and member, claimed that she had to travel to Anambra from Abuja just to witness the initiation of new members. “I joined them three months ago and during my initiation, I was forced to have sex with every registered member of the cult present that night. I was given a sedative so as not to feel what they were doing. It was not easy, but I bore the pain,” she said. Her parents, who are from Anambra State, are still alive. However, Ifechukwu said that they were not aware of her secret cult activities. “I got to know about the cult activity through a friend. She assured me that all the connection that I needed in this life will be made if I joined the group. I am from a poor family and I wanted to be the light that will change the situation in my family. “She never told me that I will be raped till the day of initiation. The day we were initiated, I was the only girl in their midst. Although, I have not started reaping the gains, I was determined to be a successful member. I was further convinced to stay because I discovered that they are more honourable than the others. I am sorry and would love to be given the opportunity to go back to school. I never knew that it is crime to be a member. I am sorry,” Ifechukwu pleaded. Another member, Ugochukwu Agbazuo, who also spoke with Saturday Sun, said that they are all undergraduates of various institutions in Anambra. “Apart from some of our national leaders, we are all students. I was initiated into the cult while I was still in my first year. I had no choice but to join them because of the harassment in school. I discovered that most of the Engineering students in my school were members of different cult groups. “Again, if you identify with a known cult in school, the lecturers will respect you. You don’t have to buy handouts or offer bribe to get credit in a course. This was why I joined them,” he said. Ugochukwu insisted that they did not steal or harass innocent people. “The guns that were found with us were bought in case there was a clash in school. It is our leaders who are all graduates and working across the country that normally assist us to secure the arms. It is strictly for defence and one of the rules of our group is that you must read and pass your exams on merit.” On the issue of rape, Ugochukwu said it only happened with female members. A female intending member cannot undergo the rigorous process during the initiation. So, our leaders suggested that the best way to get them under oath is for every registered member to have sex with her during initiation. She would be semi-conscious during the process so that she will not physically feel the pain. Ifechukwu’s case was better because we were only 20 registered men present on her day of initiation. All of our female members were raped,” he further said. The Sun
